What is GRS?

What is GRS?

What is “GRS”? Why are some plastic products worth more than just waste?

Have you ever noticed that many plastic products or clothing items today claim to be “made from recycled materials”?
But how can we really know if they are truly recycled?
How do we know companies are not simply mixing virgin plastic with recycled material and calling it “eco-friendly”?
That is exactly why the world created a standard called GRS — Global Recycled Standard.

1. What is GRS?
Think of GRS as a “passport for recycled materials.”
It is an internationally recognized certification system used to verify that a product is genuinely made from recycled materials, with traceability throughout the entire from the original waste source all the way to the final product in our hands.

2. What is the difference between normal recycled plastic and GRS-certified materials?
Regular recycled plastic simply means old plastic has been reused.
GRS, is a complete certification system that verifies the entire process through four major areas:
• Traceability
The source of recycled material must be clearly documented and verifiable. It cannot be just a marketing claim.
• Environmental Responsibility
Factories must properly manage wastewater, energy consumption, and industrial waste according to environmental requirements.
• Chemical Safety
GRS-certified materials are checked for restricted and hazardous substances to ensure they meet safety standards for users and the environment.
• Social Responsibility
The certification also covers labor conditions, including fair treatment of workers, no child labor, and proper workplace welfare — because sustainability should include both the environment and people.

3. Why should we care about GRS?
As consumers, choosing products with GRS certification means supporting real sustainability.
• Reducing the need for virgin plastic made from fossil fuels
• Supporting transparent and responsible manufacturers
• Encouraging industries to adopt more sustainable business practices

4. How to identify a genuine GRS-certified product
Authentic GRS-certified products usually display the certification information along with a valid license number, which can be verified through the official certification system.

GRS is not just about recycling.
It is about transparency, responsibility, safety, and building a more sustainable future through systems that can truly be verified.

If we want to start making more environmentally responsible choices, looking for GRS-certified products is one of the simplest and most reliable first steps.
